The years events start with the Dia de la Toma, the 2nd January, that simbolises the arrival of the catholic kings in Granada. Dedicated to the children the 5th January, Cabalgata de los Reyes, the oldest celebration in spain, the Three Kings Parade. Easter week, Semana Santa also has any interesting parades.
Most of the celebrations are related to the catholic traditions, this being the reason for the fame of the Cruces de Mayo and the Corpus Christi. In the Cruces de Mayo, the 3rd May, crosses of flowers are put on show all around the streets to the city, especially in the albayzin and the Realejo.
The Feria del Corpus is the most popular, starting every year on a monday with the switching on of the fair lights, and finishing on the following sunday with a breathtaking firework display. The dates vary according to the catholic religious calendar, but it is usually celebrated in the first week of June. You can also see colourful vivacious parades in the city centre.
Other festivals of interest are, the 29th June, San Pedro, the fiesta in the Albayzin. On this day a procession of people go up to the chapel of San miguel on horseback and in beautifully decorated carriages. Also around this time of year the International Music and Dance Festival is celebrated in the Alhambra. In the province of Granada, in Lanjaron, one of the most famous fiestas is celebrated, Las Fiestas del Agua. The fiestas start near the Hotel España, go through the village streets, Avenida Alpujarra, Calle Real, Plaza del Ayuntamiento, buckets of water, hose pipes, etc !!! The event takes place on the 23rd June the night of San Juan. Another interesting festival is that of the Prehistoria in Piñar, during the month of august, prehistoric food and drink are offered to all dressed as ancestor of that period.
These are just a few of the fiestas, as every town and village has their own patron saint festivals and special festivals and fairs of their own, all worth a visit to discover the customs and beliefs of the spanish population.
